Off Season Fitness - Get Walking

Another new year and some extra pounds have accumulated over the holidays. I had been really good about getting out and walking during the summer, but the colder temperatures put a damper on that routine. But knowing that I need to start doing something to get some of the extra weight off I have started walking again. So if you are looking for a way to get back into the swing of exercising, Walking may be the answer for you. Whether you use a treadmill or get out in the fresh air, which is what I like to do, start a regular routine of walking to get back in shape. Walking may seem like a leisurely activity, but with the right intensity, it can elevate your heart rate and burn serious calories so you can reach and maintain a healthy weight. It's simply a wonderful way to get those muscles moving.

Not only do you get the benefits of exercise, but also walking on regular basis can help reduce high blood pressure and high cholesterol, both of which contribute to heart disease. And just three hours of brisk walking per week (which is really only 30 minutes a day) has been shown to lower a woman’s risk of heart disease. The good thing about walking is that it is easier on your joints than higher impact activities like running, but still helps reduce risk for osteoporosis and reduces the risk of falls.

Finally, walking has health benefits that can reduce depression and improve mood and may help a person sleep better. So, if you are like me and can’t get out on the water in the kayak, start a walking program to keep you fit and in shape for the coming warmer temperatures when we can get back into the water for a paddle.
