Blue Trails
There is a little river that
runs not too far from our house,
but there really isn’t a good
launching point for our
inflatable kayak. I did a little
research about improving access
to this river and came across
the American Rivers “Blue Trails
Guide”. A Blue Trail is a
waterway equivalent of hiking
trails.
Seeing this was new to me I
thought including it on this
month’s Newsletter would be a
good way to help spread the word
to other kayakers who may be
searching for ideas on how to
improve a river in their area.
The obvious benefit of a Blue
Trail to an area is the
recreational aspect, but Blue
Trails also help the communities
that promote them. They
encourage physical activity;
help support local tourism and
recreation-based businesses
thereby helping the local
economy. With these improvements
community pride also develops. A
healthy river also provides cost
effective flood control and
clean drinking water.
When
people get out and enjoy their
rivers, they start to care more
about them. That’s why Blue
Trails can also be the driving
force behind stopping pollution,
removing dams that no longer
make sense, protecting against
poorly planned development along
rivers and building support for
protections such as Wild and
Scenic River designations.
American Rivers produced the
“Blue Trails Guide” to give you
all the resources you need to
establish a thriving Blue Trail
in your community. To have a
successful Blue Trail you need
to have a healthy river, which
is why the guide focuses on
river conservation. The guide
has step-by-step instructions
and practical advice on
planning, building, and managing
for conservation as well as case
studies from experienced
practitioners across the
country. You can check out the
