"Paddle The World" May Newsletter - 2011

Kayakers love the water, but this Spring there have been some areas of the country where lakes and rivers have been formed in unlikely places such as backyards and roadways. Not exactly the best places to kayak. The high water levels on several regular rivers and lakes don't always make for ideal kayaking either. Let's hope that the rest of the Spring brings better weather so everyone can get out and enjoy the outdoors. We shot this month's picture outside our home. It shows that nature can be beautiful, even after a particularly nasty storm. Our May Newsletter has some features on "Seniors on Water", kayaking destinations in California and my personal favorite, a video of suicidal Silver Carp. Our outdoor tip is about how to make a "Solar Water Heater for Camping or Kayaking" and this month's recipe is for "Mint Julep Cocktails & Mocktails."

Outdoor Tip - Solar Water Heater For Camping or Kayaking
Our solar water heater at home got me thinking of a way to heat water while camping or kayaking. Just fill some "zip to close" plastic bags with water, place them inside a black garbage bag and leave it out in the sun. The sun's heat will quickly warm the garbage bag and everything in it. Within a few hours you should have some warm water at your disposal, without needing to use any fuel to heat it.

Recipe - Mint Julep (Cocktail & Mocktail)
We're not recommending the cocktail version of this drink while kayaking. In fact, we specifically wrote about "What Not To Drink While Kayaking" in the Inflatable Kayak Blog. However, we thought that with the Kentucky Derby happening this month, we'd break from the typical kayak and outdoor related recipes to feature this traditional drink recipe in the spirit of the "fastest two minutes in sports." Here's how to fix the Kentucky Bourbon and non-Bourbon versions of the classic Mint Julep ...
